Maruti to resume operations

A month after declaring lockout at its plant in Manesar, Maruti Suzuki Thursday announced resumption of
operations from August 21 with an initial manpower of 300 workers, aiming at producing 150 cars a day.

More workers would be added subsequently as the production scales up. As many as 500 workers of the
1528 regular work force have been asked by the company not to re-join, and 1869 contract workers would be screened again when the company undertakes fresh recruitment from September two.

Maruti, which hitherto recruited workers through contractors, will now employ them directly.
Lauding the "cooperative stance" of the Haryana Government, Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava informed reporters here that the state government has stationed Rapid Action Force (RAF) having 500 police personnel headed by a senior police officer near Maruti's Manesar plant.

"In each shift, 100 such police personnel will remain in the factory premises. Additionally, 40 Personal Security Officers (PSOs) have been appointed for the safety of managers, supervisors, and workers in some special cases. Also security arrangements have been made at the residences of senior employees," Bhargava stated.

In addition to that, Maruti has created its own special force of 100 security guards, constituting mainly ex-servicemen.

Prior to the July 18 labour unrest, Maruti had 4000 employees at its Manesar plant including 3300 workers and 700 management executives.

On being asked about the volume of loss suffered by the company in the last one month, Bhargava refused to reveal any statistical figure.

"There is no increase in the number of car bookings. The number stands at 1,20,000 today which was the same as on July 18 when the riots hit the plant," he added.
